EARTH RETENTION DESIGN

Shotcrete, Soil Nail & Helical Anchor Retaining Wall Design

Structural engineering for permanent and temporary earth retention systems using reinforced shotcrete facing, soil nails, helical anchors, tiebacks, drainage, and site-specific geotechnical recommendations.

Retaining Wall Systems We Design

Shotcrete, soil nail, and helical anchor retaining walls are practical solutions for hillside sites, constrained excavations, property-line grade changes, and existing walls that need additional lateral support.

  • Soil nail walls with reinforced shotcrete facing
  • Shotcrete retaining walls for temporary or permanent excavation support
  • Helical anchor retaining wall reinforcement and tieback systems
  • Hybrid systems using soldier piles, lagging, tiebacks, nails, or anchors where required
  • Permanent earth retention systems coordinated with geotechnical reports and city requirements

Shotcrete and Soil Nail Wall Design

Soil nail walls reinforce the in-place soil mass by installing grouted steel bars into the retained soil and connecting them to a reinforced shotcrete facing. The system is typically constructed in lifts, allowing excavation and wall support to proceed in a controlled sequence.

  • Soil nail spacing, length, inclination, grout bond, and corrosion protection
  • Shotcrete facing thickness, reinforcing steel, welded wire reinforcement, and nail head detailing
  • Temporary excavation stability and permanent wall performance
  • Wall drainage, weep systems, subdrains, and hydrostatic pressure control

Helical Anchor Retaining Wall Design

Helical anchors can provide efficient tieback resistance for new retaining walls, existing wall reinforcement, slope stabilization, and excavation support where access, soil conditions, and installation requirements are appropriate.

  • Helical anchor capacity, torque correlation, embedment, and spacing
  • Connection design at shotcrete, concrete, masonry, or steel wall elements
  • Evaluation of existing wall demand, surcharge loading, and anchor load transfer
  • Corrosion protection and long-term durability for permanent installations

Engineering Considerations

  • Lateral earth pressure, seismic earth pressure, and surcharge loads
  • Global stability, internal stability, facing strength, and connection detailing
  • Groundwater, drainage, expansive soils, and long-term creep considerations
  • Adjacent buildings, property lines, utilities, pool loads, driveways, and construction sequencing
  • Coordination with geotechnical recommendations, contractor means and methods, and local agency plan check requirements

Typical Applications

  • Hillside residential developments and custom homes
  • Basement excavations and below-grade additions
  • Commercial and industrial site grading
  • Repair or strengthening of existing retaining walls
  • Temporary shoring that may become part of a permanent earth retention system

Blue Horizon Design Approach

Blue Horizon Consulting Engineers Inc. prepares practical, permit-ready retaining wall and earth retention designs for Southern California projects. Our work is coordinated with geotechnical engineers, architects, contractors, and owners to balance safety, constructability, durability, and cost.

Our retaining wall design services may include structural calculations, wall sections, reinforcement details, nail or anchor layouts, connection details, drainage coordination notes, special inspection notes, and plan check response support.
